Supercritical operates a marketplace connecting corporate buyers with verified permanent carbon removal (CDR) projects. It serves companies working toward net-zero targets by sourcing credits across eight removal methods - biochar, BECCS, enhanced weathering, direct air capture, marine CDR, bio-oil, biomass burial, and mineralization - and structuring contracts designed to manage delivery risk through buffer pools and pre-vetted alternatives.

Why it matters

Voluntary carbon markets are flooded with low-quality offsets, while genuinely permanent CDR supply is scarce and increasingly mandated. Supercritical focuses exclusively on durable removal rather than avoidance credits, applying a 118-point vetting framework that rejects 84% of assessed projects. Its climate science team advises the Science Based Targets initiative on CDR guidance, meaning the company helps shape the standards that will govern corporate procurement from 2028 onward.

The platform claims coverage of over 80% of the global durable CDR market, with 1.3 million tonnes contracted and more than 200 corporate buyers. It also co-develops supply directly - facilitating a 1 million tonne biochar offtake agreement between an early-stage project and Microsoft.
