Leap

Software platform that connects distributed energy resources - batteries, smart thermostats, EVs - to grid services markets as virtual power plants

Leap (Leapfrog Power) provides a software platform that lets technology companies - makers of home batteries, smart thermostats, heat pumps, and EV chargers - build and operate virtual power plants (VPPs) under their own brands. Through a single API integration, Leap connects these distributed energy resources to demand response and other grid services programs across multiple energy markets, handling enrollment, dispatch, and payments.

Why it matters

Virtual power plants aggregate thousands of small, grid-interactive devices to shift or reduce electricity demand when the grid is stressed - doing the same work as a peaker plant without burning fuel. By making it commercially viable for technology providers to participate in these programs, Leap accelerates the deployment of demand flexibility at scale. This helps reduce reliance on fossil-fuel peaker plants, lowers electricity costs during high-demand periods, and makes the grid more resilient as more variable renewable energy comes online.

Leap operates as a pure software layer - no hardware required - which lets partners scale across markets quickly. The company serves battery storage providers, smart building technology firms, and EV charging operators.
