About the Role

The movement of hydrocarbons using third-party vessels plays a key role in our operations and comes with environmental, commercial and operational considerations.

As part of the Shipping Optimization team, this role focuses on improving performance across bp’s time-chartered fleet in the East region. This role will work closely with ship owners and technical managers to translate vessel performance data into clear commercial outcomes.

As a senior member of the team, you will lead performance management across key partner relationships, identify opportunities to improve efficiency, reliability and emissions performance, and support better commercial decision-making.

What You Will Do

Manage Time Charter Partnerships

  • Act as a primary contact for key time charter relationships after contract award
  • Partner with ship owners and technical managers to review performance trends
  • Set clear expectations across safety, , efficiency and commercial outcomes
  • Encourage adoption of operational and technical improvements supported by data

2. Drive Commercial Performance

  • Translate vessel performance into measurable business outcomes (e.g. fuel efficiency, reliability, emissions performance)
  • Provide clear performance insights to senior partners
  • Connect operational performance with financial impact and value delivery
  • Support resolution of sophisticated underperformance cases

3. Support Risk Awareness

  • Use data and insights to highlight marine risk across the portfolio
  • Present risks in a clear and practical way to support decision-making
  • Collaborate with and vetting teams while maintaining a commercial focus

4. Build and Improve Performance Frameworks

  • Develop and enhance performance frameworks across key areas such as:
  • Commercial performance
  • Operational effectiveness
  • Energy efficiency and emissions
  • Claims and compliance
  • Establish benchmarks and track performance using dashboards and reporting tools

5. Lead Performance Improvement Initiatives

  • Identify underperformance early and lead improvement plans
  • Work with partners to implement targeted operational improvements
  • Ensure ongoing monitoring and follow-up to deliver sustained results

6. Contribute Across the Vessel Lifecycle

  • Provide input into vessel selection, deployment and chartering decisions
  • Bring performance and lifecycle insights into commercial discussions
  • Highlight key contractual considerations and risks before agreements are finalised

7. Build External Relationships

  • Develop strong working relationships with ship owners, technical managers and industry peers
  • Share market insights and standard methodologies within the team

8. Enable Data-Driven Decisions

  • Work with digital teams to improve data visibility and reporting
  • Use analytics to generate actionable insights
  • Support consistent and clear performance reporting across partners

What We Are Looking For

  • Experience in maritime operations, particularly with time charter vessels and third-party fleet management
  • Ability to engage and influence senior stakeholders and external partners
  • Strong understanding of how operational performance impacts commercial outcomes
  • Experience developing or managing performance frameworks
  • Knowledge of charter party structures and vessel performance drivers (e.g. fuel efficiency, voyage optimisation)
  • Familiarity with industry frameworks such as SIRE or TMSA
