About the role

Reporting directly to the Head of Legal - Asia, the Legal Counsel supports the Hong Kong and Taiwan businesses on legal matters with the objective of protecting the interests of the business. The role works closely with business clients to provide high-quality, practical, commercially focused and independent legal advice and services in accordance with company policies and applicable ethical and professional standards. The Legal Counsel is expected to operate with a high degree of autonomy, managing legal matters and stakeholder relationships while exercising sound judgment in proactively escalating significant matters and keeping the Head of Legal – Asia appropriately informed of material legal issues, considerations and developments affecting the business. The role will also collaborate with and assist other legal personnel across , the US and Europe, as well as across other group entities.

Responsibilities

  • Provide legal advice which is timely, accurate, concise, useful and protects the interests of the business
  • Understand the business’ policies, compliance obligations and risk appetite, and apply that knowledge in providing advice
  • Monitor and advise on relevant legal, regulatory and policy developments, proactively identify legal and regulatory risks, and recommend practical, risk-based solutions
  • Legal Department Contribution - Participate in Legal Department planning sessions and work diligently, as part of the team, to achieve the Legal Department's strategic objectives including compliance goals.
  • Education & Training - Deliver training to business and conduct legal clinics
  • Leadership & Stakeholder Management - Individual contributor role with leadership through influence. Provides trusted legal guidance to business stakeholders, fostering sound decision-making and promoting compliance, integrity, and commercial best practice.
  • Managing business expectations and multiple high priorities with short lead times.
  • Working with other business units and departments who have different priorities and needs.
  • Working with outsourced partners to resolve issues.
  • Balancing legal risk management with commercial objectives in a fast-moving business environment.
  • Advising on a broad range of matters, including contractual, technology, intellectual property, content, regulatory and dispute-related issues.
  • Advising on complex government and public sector tenders and procurement processes, often within short timeframes and with significant legal, commercial, and compliance considerations.
  • Escalating material legal, regulatory, financial or reputational risks to the Head of Legal – Asia where appropriate.

Experience & Requirements

  • Qualified lawyer in Hong Kong or another recognised common law jurisdiction;
  • Mainland China-qualified candidates with significant Hong Kong experience will also be considered
  • 6 years + PQE
  • Previous experience in a law firm or an in-house legal department
  • Experience in commercial, corporate, litigation or IT/IP law
  • Sound legal and commercial acumen
  • Strong drafting & negotiating skills
  • Ability to work autonomously
  • Team player/ willingness to develop new skills
  • Interest in and openness to developing AI fluency and leveraging technology to enhance legal service delivery
  • Strong stakeholder management and influencing skills
