Job Description
The Data and Artificial Intelligence Platform (DAP) group is a key component of Visa's Technology organization, providing the enabling technology and processes to handle Visa's data assets and deliver valuable information, products, and services to customers. Within DAP, the Data as a Service (DaaS) team consists of skilled data engineers focused on building data pipelines to meet Visa's data needs and delivers secure, high-quality, and easy-to-use data assets.
As a Senior Data Engineer, you'll join our Data & AI Platform – Data as a Service organization in Foster City, California. You will help design, enhance, and build our data infrastructure and pipelines within an agile development environment, using Gen AI regularly, and collaborating with colleagues who will support and challenge you daily.

Role Summary:
The I5 Data Engineer is a strong individual contributor who designs, builds, and operates scalable, reliable, and compliant data pipelines and platform services. This role focuses on delivering high‑quality data products, improving platform resilience, and enabling downstream analytics and client consumption at scale.
The engineer works independently on well‑defined problem areas, partners closely with peer engineers and cross‑functional teams, and contributes to platform modernization, operational excellence, and secure data handling practices.
Key Responsibilities:
Data Engineering & Platform Development:
- Design, implement, and maintain scalable data pipelines using batch and/or streaming processing patterns.
- Build and enhance data platform services that support analytics, reporting, and client-facing use cases.
- Ensure data quality, referential integrity, and consistency across datasets and environments.
- Contribute to platform evolution efforts such as modernization, standardization, and migration initiatives.
Reliability, Scale, and Operations:
- Improve operational stability through better observability, alerting, and proactive issue detection.
- Participate in root cause analysis for production incidents and implement durable fixes.
- Optimize pipelines and infrastructure to support performance, scale, and SLA compliance.
- Support production readiness, release execution, and post-deployment validation.
Security & Compliance:
- Implement data obfuscation, masking, and access controls to meet security and compliance requirements.
- Partner with Cybersecurity and governance teams to ensure platforms meet regulatory and audit expectations.
- Follow secure development and deployment practices across environments.
Collaboration & Execution:
- Work closely with product, QA, SRE, and downstream consumer teams to deliver end‑to‑end solutions.
- Contribute to design discussions, documentation, and technical decision‑making within the team.
- Support client or internal onboarding by enabling reliable, consumable data interfaces.
This is a hybrid position. Expectation of days in office will be confirmed by your hiring manager.
Visa requires at least 3 days in office, expectations of these days will be confirmed by your Hiring Manager.
Qualifications
Basic Qualifications: 2+ years of relevant work experience and a Bachelors degree, OR 5+ years of relevant work experience Preferred Qualifications: 3 or more years of work experience with a Bachelor’s Degree or more than 2 years of work experience with an Advanced Degree (e.g. Masters, MBA, JD, MD) Strong experience in data engineering, backend engineering, or platform development. Proficiency in SQL and at least one general‑purpose programming language (e.g., Java, Scala, Python). Hands‑on experience with distributed data systems (e.g., Hadoop/Spark‑based platforms, relational databases). Experience utilizing GenAI technologies in software development Understanding of data modeling, data quality, and lifecycle management. 5 or more years of work experience with a Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or a related field or more than 3 years of experience after Advanced Degree (e.g. Masters, MBA or PhD) Hands on Experience in on-prem (Hadoop) and cloud-based data platforms (AWS, Azure, DataBricks) and related data storage (HDFS, S3) and processing tools (Spark) Experience in an Agile environment, with a strong emphasis on best software development practices such as CI/CD, code reviews, and test automation, using tools like Jira and Jira Align Experience with streaming or event‑driven architectures. Experience supporting regulated or security‑sensitive data. Knowledge of semantic layers, metadata systems, or data governance concepts.

The estimated salary range for this position is $123,000.00 to $ 190,900.00 USD per year, which may include potential sales incentive payments (if applicable). Salary may vary depending on job-related factors which may include knowledge, skills, experience, and location. In addition, this position may be eligible for bonus and equity.Visa has a comprehensive benefits package for which this position may be eligible that includes Medical, Dental, Vision, 401(k), FSA/HSA, Life Insurance, Paid Time Off, and Wellness Program.

Travel Requirements
This position requires travel 5-10% of the time.

This position will be performed in an office setting. The position will require the incumbent to sit and stand at a desk, communicate in person and by telephone, frequently operate standard office equipment, such as telephones and computers.
