Job Description:
Where you fit?
This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced senior maritime professional with a strong nautical background to join a dynamic Fleet Operations team. The role offers the opportunity not only to apply established expertise and competencies but also to further develop professionally within a progressive and sustainable operating environment.
The incumbent will be responsible for driving the implementation of navigation, seamanship, and cargo handling policies across STASCO-managed vessels, while providing leadership, direction, and support across the full spectrum of ship operations, including engagement with fleet Masters.
What’s the role?
The primary purpose of this role is to ensure the safe, efficient, and cost-effective operation of STASCO-managed vessels, with a primary focus on the LNG fleet. The role is responsible for ensuring that all operational practices comply with Flag State and Port State regulations, as well as the commercial requirements of applicable charter parties, while minimising Shell Group’s exposure to environmental risk and pollution.
Key Accountabilities
-
Ensure that vessels within the allocated fleet are operated safely, reliably, and economically, in line with the highest professional standards and latest industry best practices.
-
Ensure full compliance at all times with international regulations, Flag State requirements, and company policies relating to ship operations, cargo care, navigation safety, and personnel health and safety.
-
Maintain fleet readiness against quality requirements by coordinating timely SIRE inspections, responding effectively to observations, driving remedial actions, and identifying gaps in policies and procedures.
-
Safeguard the reputation of the Shell Group by proactively minimising environmental risk and ensuring robust pollution prevention practices within the scope of responsibility.
-
Act as the Company’s on-site representative in the event of an incident or casualty, coordinating response efforts and driving resolution through to completion.
-
Lead incident investigations, where required, and ensure that lessons learned are effectively captured, communicated, and embedded across the STASCO-managed fleet and, where appropriate, the wider Group.
-
Build and maintain strong working relationships with commercial stakeholders within Shell and external partners, ensuring alignment on vessel capabilities and operational requirements.
-
Actively promote and embed Group and Company HSEQ policies, ensuring clear understanding and consistent application across fleet staff, particularly shipboard management.
-
Serve as a key operational link between shore-based STASCO management and vessel crews, ensuring effective day-to-day communication and alignment.
-
Identify underperformance and drive improvements by evaluating alternative systems, equipment, contractors, and methodologies to enhance reliability, efficiency, and safety.
-
Act as focal point for crewing matters in coordination with manning agencies, including assessment of personnel capability, advising on promotions, secondments, career development, and participating in Master promotions assessments.
-
Serve as the focal point for insurance claims relating to vessels within the fleet group.
-
Coordinate and close out office responses to internal ISM audits in collaboration with the DPA function.
-
Drive the implementation of quality improvement initiatives and enhanced operational processes, both on board and ashore.
-
Undertake vessel visits as required by the Manager, Fleet Operations.
-
Participate in the Duty Superintendent roster.
-
Provide operational cover for other Superintendents, as required.
What we need from you?
- A Class 1 Certificate of Competency as a Navigation Officer is essential for this role, together with proven experience serving as Master on LNG and/or LPG carriers.
- Previous experience as an LNG and/or LPG carriers Operational Superintendent is highly desirable. Experience in site teams during oil and/or LNG refit projects, as well as involvement in newbuild or vessel delivery projects in a Superintendent capacity, would be advantageous. Prior experience sailing within the Shell-managed fleet would be beneficial.
- The role requires a strong working knowledge of international maritime regulations and industry standards, including but not limited to MARPOL, SOLAS, ISM Code, and the IGC Code, as well as industry guidelines such as ISGOTT and SIGTTO. Familiarity with OCIMF, SIRE, CDI, and Port and Flag State inspection regimes is essential.
- This expertise should be underpinned by extensive seagoing experience and a deep practical understanding of marine operations.
- A solid understanding of process safety and a strong commitment to HSEQ principles are required, along with a proactive approach to continuous improvement in both individual responsibilities and broader vessel operations and project activities.
- The role demands well-developed leadership capabilities, supported by strong written and verbal communication skills, enabling effective engagement at senior levels. An inclusive and collaborative mindset is important, particularly when working across geographically dispersed and multicultural teams.
- Candidates should demonstrate strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, with the capacity to clearly articulate situations and proposed solutions to stakeholders across varying levels of seniority.
- Strong communication: Fluency in English, with the capacity to communicate clearly both verbally and in writing, is essential.
- Manage and deliver across multiple concurrent workstreams is essential.
-
