Job description

Mill is a waste prevention technology company reimagining what it means to eliminate waste, starting with food. We build smart systems and infrastructure for homes, businesses, and municipalities that transform food scraps from landfill-bound waste into valuable resources, including chicken feed. Tens of thousands of Mill’s residential food recyclers are already helping households divert millions of pounds of food scraps every year, paving the way for our upcoming launch of Mill Commercial—the industry’s first end-to-end solution for managing, understanding, and preventing food waste in commercial environments (e.g. grocery, restaurants, food services). At Mill, we are passionate about building easy-to-use, beautifully designed technologies that keep food in the food system and out of landfills.

We’re looking for a hands-on Senior Cloud Engineer to lead our Cloud work across our AWS infrastructure. This role is responsible for designing, building, and maintaining our end-to-end applications across web, mobile, cloud, and data that support our customer experiences.

In this role, you'll work with a cross functional group of engineers, guide architectural decisions, and help scale products that are critical to our success and growth.

What You’ll Do:

  • Collaborate with a cross-functional team of engineers building web and mobile applications, cloud backends, and data pipelines.
  • Lead end-to-end technical delivery—from architecture and design to implementation, testing, deployment, and operations
  • Collaborate with product and design teams to deliver intuitive and performant user experiences.
  • Champion modern software development practices, including CI/CD, IaC, observability, and test automation.
  • Ensure the reliability, scalability, and maintainability of our systems.
  • Promote a culture of ownership, learning, and continuous improvement.

Required Qualifications:

  • 6+ years as a cloud (services) engineer / backend engineer
  • Strong API design experience, and an understanding of building asynchronous systems and error handling.
  • Hands-on experience with AWS (AWS IoT is a plus)
  • Familiarity with data pipelines and cloud-native data streaming and processing tools, such as Kinesis
  • Strong background in Python
  • Solid understanding of cloud infrastructure, preferably with serverless architectures and Infrastructure as Code (IaC) tools (e.g. API Gateway, Lambdas, RDS, DynamoDB, IAM, and CDK).
  • Passion for building reliable systems with deep knowledge of observability, tracing, and system performance.
  • Excellent communication skills.

Preferred Skills:

  • TypeScript and modern JavaScript development.
  • Data streaming and warehousing technologies like Kafka and Snowflake.
  • Mobile application development, including React Native, native modules, Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE), deep linking, and websockets.
  • Access control systems, such as designing Role-Based Access Control (RBAC) for internal and external applications.
  • Experience with version control, CI/CD, and build systems (e.g., GitHub Actions).
  • Familiarity with compliance and security standards like ISO 27001, SOC 2, GDPR, and CPRA.

The estimated base salary range for this position is $220k to $250k, which does not include the value of benefits or a potential equity grant. A wide range of factors are considered in making compensation decisions, including but not limited to skill sets, market conditions, experience and training, licensure and certifications, and business and organizational needs.
