Internship within Re-entry Analysis Methodology & Tool Improvements (d/f/m)
Are you looking for an internship and want to get to know the work of a Space Physics Engineer (d/f/m)? Then apply now! We look forward to you supporting us in Thermal Engineering & Space Environment department as an intern (d/f/m)!
-
Location: Immenstaad
-
Start: 01.09.2026
-
Duration: 3-6 months
When satellites reach their End of Life, they pose potential risks to the ground population during re-entry. To demonstrate compliance with strict international risk requirements, Airbus uses ESA’s DRAMA tool suite.
With the release of the new DRAMA V4.1 (beta) and new requirements for probabilistic (Monte Carlo) analyses, we need to review and optimize our current methodologies. This internship offers you the chance to dive into the multidisciplinary world of re-entry analysis, combining space debris mitigation with smart software solutions.
Your location
At the Airbus site in Friedrichshafen you will be working on innovation where others spend their holidays. Enjoy panoramic views of Lake Constance while having lunch in our canteen. And after work, join one of our many corporate sports groups to go running, sailing or skiing.
Your benefits
-
Attractive salary and work-life balance with a 35-hour week (flexitime).
-
International environment with the opportunity to network globally.
-
Work with modern/diversified technologies.
-
At Airbus, we see you as a valuable team member and you are not hired to brew coffee, instead you are in close contact with the interfaces and are part of our weekly team meetings.
-
Opportunity to participate in the Generation Airbus Community to expand your own network.
Your tasks and responsibilities
-
Tool Evaluation: Compare the baseline tool (DRAMA 3.1.1) with the new beta version (DRAMA 4.1) regarding methodology, user interface, and accuracy.
-
Methodology Review: Analyze the challenges of probabilistic vs. non-probabilistic approaches using a practical satellite use case.
-
Process Automation: Use the tool's Python interface to develop and refine scripts that simplify input data generation and post-processing.
-
Documentation: Create a user-friendly internal guideline/manual for future Airbus DRAMA users and compile lessons learned (e.g., regarding "Design for Demise").
Desired skills and qualifications
-
Enrolled fulltime-student (d/f/m) in Aerospace Engineering, Physics, Mechanical Engineering, or a similar field.
-
First experience with Python programming is mandatory.
-
Basic knowledge of general satellite system design.
-
Strong analytical skills and the ability to work independently.
-
Fluency in English (working language).
