Job description

ERM is hiring a Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) Specialist to support our key mining client in Mississauga, Ontario.  The HSE specialist will establish and implement the core HSE program elements required to close identified gaps and achieve compliance with applicable Ontario legislation, while supporting the continuous improvement of HSE performance across laboratory, process development plant, and supporting operations.  This is a hybrid (onsite 2-3 days per week) full time (37.5 hours per week) limited-term role with a duration of 12 months, extendable

Requirements:

  • Develop fit-for-purpose HSE procedures and controls tailored to specific work areas and activities, ensuring they are practical, clearly documented, and aligned with applicable regulatory and Vale requirements.

  • Establish a structured and sustainable approach for managing HSE activities, including tracking, assignment, follow-up, and escalation, enabling site personnel to effectively coordinate and maintain HSE tasks with minimal ongoing effort.

  • Review and adapt existing HSE procedures and protocols for application at the facility, including coordination with Operations and Corporate HSE personnel as required, and the formalization and training of site personnel.

  • Identify and integrate appropriate Ontario Division resources, systems, and subject matter expertise (e.g., environmental permitting, compliance tools, training systems), to support and enhance the site’s HSE management program.

  • Support site personnel in the effective application and sustainment of HSE procedures and systems, including clarification of roles, responsibilities, and expectations for ongoing execution.

  • Review, document, and formalize controls for high-risk hazards, including evaluation of existing practices, definition of required controls, and establishment of processes for ongoing monitoring and periodic reassessment to ensure effectiveness.

  • Support the development of a site-specific training matrix in coordination with the Ontario division training group, aligning with existing systems and ensuring training requirements are clearly defined, assigned, and maintainable.

  • Document HSE procedures and supporting documentation tailored to work areas and activities

  • Establish a structured and documented process for managing HSE activities, including tools and workflows to support tracking, assignment, and follow-up, enabling site personnel to effectively coordinate and sustain HSE tasks

  • Document controls and supporting materials for identified high-risk hazards, including defined control measures and processes for ongoing monitoring and reassessment

  • A site-specific training matrix, including defined training requirements and assigned responsibilities

  • Supporting materials for implementation, including procedures, guidance documents, and training content as required to enable effective adoption by site personnel

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Post-secondary education in HSE or related discipline, preferred
  • Minimum of 7 years of relevant industrial or laboratory HSE experience
  • Strong knowledge of Ontario OHSA and applicable regulations
  • Familiarity with Joint Health and Safety Committee (JHSC) processes and Ontario Internal Responsibility System (IRS) principles
  • CRSP (Canadian Registered Safety Professional) preferred

Pay Transparency: 

For the HSE Specialist position, we anticipate the annual base pay of $107,682 – $125,108, $51.77/hr – $60.14/hr USD_, limited-term, non-exempt.  An employee’s pay position within this range will be based on several factors including, but not limited to, relevant education, qualifications, certifications, experience, skills, geographic location, performance, shift, travel requirements, sales or revenue-based metrics, and business or organizational needs.  We also may have instances where employee’s fall outside of the range based on the factors noted above.  This job may be eligible for bonus pay (casual and fixed term/Flexforce employees are NOT bonus eligible)._
