About the Role

Do you love science but feel that a traditional research path doesn’t fully satisfy your curiosity and drive to explore science more broadly? Are you energized by the idea of engaging with diverse research communities and shaping science communication?

Nature Reviews Earth & Environment (https://www.nature.com/natrevearthenviron/)—a top-ranked geoscience journal—is an online journal publishing authoritative, commissioned Review, Perspective and Comment articles covering the full breadth of Earth and environmental sciences. Core themes of the journal include weather and climate, surface processes, solid Earth and environmental science.

We are seeking an enthusiastic, motivated and proactive Associate or Senior Editor with a background in climate science to lead and help shape the weather and climate area of the journal. However, candidates with backgrounds in any area of Earth Science are welcome to apply, particularly if they have broader geoscientific interest and understanding.

This intellectually stimulating role offers an exciting opportunity to help shape the future of science communication and influence thinking across key areas of Earth and environmental sciences.

The position is offered on a permanent full-time basis and will be located in our Madrid, Spain, or Shanghai, China, offices. All employees will be expected to be based in the office in line with Springer Nature’s hybrid working policy.

Role responsibilities include:

  • Commissioning narrative review articles and opinion pieces.
  • Working closely with authors throughout the writing and revision process by providing: feedback on article synopses, developmental edits on first drafts, line-by-line edits on the final manuscript pre-acceptance, and developing ideas for figures and other display items.
  • Peer-review coordination.
  • Writing Research Highlights and other editorial content.
  • Contributing to editorial strategy and planning.
  • Collaborating on special projects within and across journal teams.
  • Engaging extensively with the global scientific community through in-person and virtual attendance of international conferences, institutional visits, and author outreach.

To be considered for the position, candidates will have:

  • A PhD in any aspect of Earth science, preferably within weather and climate science.
  • Demonstrable ability to edit text for sense, clarity, factual correctness and language.
  • Strong writing ability and excellent communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational, multitasking and interpersonal skills.
  • Keen attention to detail.
  • The ability to absorb new areas of research, and identify new developments and research trends in fields beyond their immediate specialty.
  • Willingness to travel to meet scientists, learn about their work and advocate for the journal

Editorial experience is not required as full training will be provided. However, candidates with sufficient prior editorial experience might be eligible for a Senior Editor position.

As Springer Nature is committed to our diversity, equity and inclusion strategy, we welcome applicants from diverse backgrounds.

To apply,please send:

  • A brief cover letter briefly explaining your interest in the role, relevant experience, preferred office of employment, salary expectations and current notice period.
  • A CV detailing your education, employment history, list of published scientific papers, and any achievements demonstrating your suitability for the position.
  • 4 Review article ideas, in each case offering a title and potential lead author, including a brief (<100 words) explanation of how you developed the idea, justification of why you think the topic is a good fit for the journal, and how you identified the potential lead author. These ideas should span topics outside of the specific expertise of the candidate and highlight their knowledge and understanding of a range of topics across weather and climate sciences. For published Review content see  https://www.nature.com/natrevearthenviron/reviews-and-analysis.
