SBTi
Science Based Targets initiative
An initiative that defines and validates corporate greenhouse gas reduction targets aligned with climate science.
Last updated
The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) helps companies set greenhouse gas emissions reduction targets that are consistent with what climate science indicates is needed to limit global warming in line with the Paris Agreement. A target is "science-based" when it meets the initiative's criteria.
SBTi provides criteria, methods, and a validation service. Companies submit near-term and, where relevant, long-term targets, and SBTi assesses whether they meet the criteria. The Net-Zero Standard sets out what a credible corporate net-zero target involves, including deep emission cuts across the value chain before any use of permanent carbon removals for residual emissions.
SBTi is voluntary and is not a government regulation, but validated targets have become a common reference point in corporate climate commitments and in investor expectations.
SBTi work increases demand for greenhouse gas accounting, decarbonization strategy, and climate target-setting skills in corporate sustainability teams.
Who it applies to
Companies and financial institutions that voluntarily set emissions reduction targets and seek validation that those targets are consistent with limiting warming in line with the Paris Agreement.
