OhmConnect

Home energy management platform that coordinates smart thermostats and connected devices to form virtual power plants

Renew Home (formerly OhmConnect) operates a home energy management platform that embeds demand-response features into smart thermostats and other connected devices. The platform automatically shifts when homes use energy - moving consumption to times when electricity is cheaper, cleaner, or when the grid is under less stress - without requiring homeowners to change their behavior.

Why it matters

By aggregating millions of participating homes, Renew Home creates virtual power plants (VPPs) - a grid resource that can deliver gigawatts of flexible capacity using existing infrastructure rather than new generation. This helps utilities balance supply and demand, reduces reliance on fossil-fuel peaker plants, and lowers household energy bills. The company is working with partners such as NRG to build a 1-GW VPP in Texas using Nest and Vivint smart thermostats.

Renew Home serves three audiences: homeowners seeking savings, energy providers needing dispatchable capacity, and device manufacturers looking to add energy-smart features. The platform has documented over 25 million energy shifts and was named among Fast Company's most innovative energy companies of 2026.
