IFC

World Bank Group arm that invests in and advises private sector companies in developing countries to drive economic and climate impact

IFC (International Finance Corporation) is the private-sector lending and investment arm of the World Bank Group, operating in more than 100 countries. It provides debt, equity, and advisory services to companies and financial institutions in emerging markets - spanning infrastructure, agribusiness, financial institutions, manufacturing, and more. In fiscal year 2025, IFC committed a record $71.7 billion to private companies and financial institutions in developing countries.

Why it matters

Climate is one of IFC's core priority areas. It channels capital toward low-carbon infrastructure, green buildings, renewable energy, and climate-resilient agriculture in markets where private finance is otherwise scarce. It also issues green bonds and social bonds to mobilize additional private capital, and applies environmental and social performance standards across its entire portfolio. For sustainability professionals, IFC offers roles spanning green cities financing, climate risk, ESG advisory, and impact measurement across some of the world's most challenging markets.
